How to install an eSIM on iPhone
To install an eSIM on iPhone, open Settings, tap Mobile Data, then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code your provider emailed you. Confirm the plan, label it, and turn on Data Roaming for that line when you arrive. The whole process takes about two minutes.
Bought your eSIM? Good.
You are about two minutes from being sorted with your travel eSIM, and you can do all of it from your sofa.
Do it before you fly, though. Installing needs wifi, and airport wifi is a special kind of misery you do not want to rely on.
Before you start
You need three things before you install: an eSIM-capable iPhone, a stable wifi connection, and the QR code from your order email. If you are not sure your handset qualifies, it is worth a thirty-second check that your iPhone is unlocked and eSIM-ready first.
Every iPhone from the iPhone XS onwards has an eSIM, so odds are you are fine.
The one thing that trips people up is a locked phone. If your iPhone is tied to a single network, it will refuse a new plan no matter how many times you scan.
Sort that first, then carry on.
The steps, in order
Here is the whole thing, start to finish.
- Open Settings, then tap Mobile Data (some iPhones say Mobile Service).
- Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
- Point your camera at the QR code from your order email. If you are reading the email on the same phone, tap Enter Details Manually and paste the code instead.
- Tap Continue, and let the plan install. This takes a few seconds.
- Give the plan a clear label, like "Travel" or "Spain", so you can spot it later.
- Choose your default line. Keep your home number for calls and texts, and set the eSIM for mobile data when you travel.
That is it. The eSIM is on your phone.
Notice what you did not do. No card. No paperclip. No shop.
One thing to do when you land
Your eSIM will not use data until you switch on Data Roaming for that line, which you do on arrival, not before. Go to Settings, Mobile Data, tap the travel plan, and turn Data Roaming on. This tells your phone to use the local network abroad.
The word "roaming" scares people. Do not let it.
On a travel eSIM, roaming just means "use the local network here". It is not the expensive kind your home provider charges for. It is the whole point of the plan.
Flip it on when you land, and your phone connects.
Set the eSIM as your data line
To use your eSIM for data, set it as the line for Mobile Data in Settings while keeping your home line for calls. Your iPhone lets you pick which line handles what, so your usual number stays live for texts while the eSIM carries the internet.
This is the bit that keeps your normal number working.

Both run at once, and you decide which does what in a couple of taps.
If it will not install
If your eSIM will not install, the usual causes are a locked iPhone, a weak internet connection, or a QR code that was already used. Check your phone is unlocked, connect to stable wifi, and if it still fails, the fixes that solve almost every eSIM problem cover the rest.
Most install hiccups come down to one of three things.
